About the show (ENGLISH)
Funkþátturinn operates precise space machinery to hone in on new sounds
Funkþátturinn is a long-running radio show on Iceland’s Radio X-ið FM 977. The show is dedicated to most forms of danceable electronic music, with a special focus on spotlighting new or forgotten sounds.
The show seeks to find and spotlight the freshest artists and scenes from all continents (allthough the scene in Antarctica seems to be pretty weak), and rather than sailing the safe waters of a couple of safe flavors of house, we try to play music that is all over the shop, from Dance-rock to Dubstep to Disco-edits and all kinds of music that doesn’t fit into any pre-defined genres (or at least not ones that start with a capital D). A special emphasis is also on promoting the local electronic scene.
The show has been on the air on X-ið since the station was formed in 1994. One of the station’s founders, Þossi, had a nice collection of funk records he wanted to play on air late at night, hence the name. He soon figured out that he wanted to play a lot more than Funk, and so the eclectic sound of the show came to be.
Þossi left the show in the late ’90s in the capable hands of Don Balli Funk, and in the late ’00s a second host was added, Terrordisco.
The show is broadcast on X-ið, on FM97.7 in Reykjavik and other frequencies accross Iceland, and on the net at www.x977.is. The show has a Podcast which is frequently broken, which only adds to the excitement.
